This young woman has willpower, ambition and a portion of talent. Christina Schwanitz a name for keeping in mind. She convinced
at the DLV Juniors Meeting in Mannheim with a wideness of 18,79 meters in Shot Put. With this performance a third time she
reached the qualification- norm for the World Championships in Helsinki. Although she constituted her claim to be in front
at the European U23 Championships in Erfurt (14.- 17. July 2005).
By the way she came to athletics by a fluke. "A former teacher send me to a Shot Put competition five years ago. With a
winning margin of 5 meters I came in first." It was a lucky chance. You should be appreciative to this teacher, when you
look closer to the development from Christina.
2001 she moved to Dresden and changed the club to SV Neckarsulm. "They support me in every situation". After the certificate
of secondary modern school last year she had the chance to offer one year for the sport. By training three times a week she
reached 17 meters. To support this talent was a matter of course. And she did not disappointed the expectations.
"Now I have more time for training, in winter there were six times a week possible", she explains the increase of her personal
best from 16,85 meters (2004) to 18,84 meters. "Previously I was always think about school. Now I am able to concentrate on
my sport" she says. You can hear that she has fun by doing that. "Shot Put is a combination of technique speed and a clear
mind, that is what I love."
Deep in her heart the borned Saxon lives for Shot Put. When I go to bed in the evening I look at photos from my last competitions
and I try to internalise what my coach Peter Ogiolda critizised on my technique." So the topic Shot Put keeps her busy the whole
day. "You have to train to be succesful." Her words show the willpower and they discribe: Giving up is not possible for her.
Support from her family
However… "There were situations I wanted to abandon everything." But in those situations she have her family and her boyfriend,
who supports her. They tell her that she can make her dream come true to participate at the Olympic Games in Beijing.
The thrower, who like to spend her time on the balcony at home in the little village Haberschlacht by reading a book, considers
her strength in her purposefulness. "Besides I can fight against my inner temptation. "I feel not always the delight to go to
training. But sometimes you have to face it."
There is one thing she will never be friend of: running. "It is really not a hobby of mine. Even I know that I have to set a
basis of andurance. I am lazy by doing this. Perhaps my discipline is the reason."
Erfurt und Helsinki?
Christina Schwanitz knows the feeling standing on the podium. Last year she came in second at the Juniors World Championships
in Grosseto (Italy). She won`t get under pressure in view of the European U23 Championships."Sure I want to be in front. A place
under the first six would be great but I won´t establish. I only think from one competition to the next." Just for comparing: At
the European U23 Championships 2003 in Bydgzcz (Poland) Natalya Khoroneko won the gold medal mit 17,66 meters.
At the moment, the young german athlete is on the sixth place of top of eurpeans standings. So she is not only a medal-candidate
for Erfurt, but also a possible participant for the World Championships. "Sure it would be great! ButI assume that Astrid
Kumbernuss will get better. So I should be the fourth. But you never know."
Trust in own facilities
Her competitors for the tickets to Finland she will meet on the 2nd of July at the German Championships in Wattenscheid.
"I will fight", she sends I warning to them. Christina Schwanitz knows that she only could be in fourth. Maybe she will be lucky.
"I know about my talent" she tells self- confident and offensive. "It is not worse not to reach the World Championships this
year. I am still young and I know about my potential. "When you want something for sure, you can reach everything and I will!"
