Baba and Dibelkova lead Czech team

Czech Republic
[11.07.2005] The Czech Athletic Federation is sending a team of 16 athletes (14 men, 2 women) to the European Athletics Under 23 Championships in Erfurt on
14-17 July.

At the last European Athletics U23 Championships in Bydgoszcz in 2003 the Czech Team won two medals. Jarmila Klimesova won Gold in the women’s javelin and Michaela Mannova took Silver in the 3000m steeplechase. The leading hopes in this year’s team are high jumper Jaroslav Baba and race walker Barbora Dibelkova.

Baba set a Czech national record of 2.36m at the Golden Gala meeting in Rome last Friday and has also cleared 2.37m indoors this year. At the age of 20 Baba has already achieved success in senior competition, taking the Bronze medal at last year’s Olympics. He was European Junior champion in 2003 and also won Bronze at the 2004 World Indoor Championships.

Dibelkova set a personal best and Czech record of 1:31:01 earlier this year which places her fourth on this year’s European U23 rankings behind three Russians. She has already competed in the Olympic Games and World Championships and finished sixth in the last European Athletics U23 Championships at the age of 20.
