[05.07.2005] The German Athletic Federation has selected a team of 41 men and 39 women for the European Athletics Under 23 Championships in Erfurt on 14-17 July.

Seven athletes named in the team are also selected for the IAAF World Championships in August - sprinters Kamghe Gaba (400m & 4x400m) and Verena Sailer (100m & 4x100m), shot putters Petra Lammert and Christina Schwanitz , discus thrower Robert Harting and hammer throwers Betty Heidler and Kathrin Klaas.

Other athletes in the team have the chance to ensure their places in the team for Helsinki with good performances in Erfurt. Sebastian Ernst and Till Helmke will be fighting for the one remaining place in the 4x100m squad and either Christine Schulz or Lilli Schwarzkopf will be added to team in the heptathlon after the Championships.

At the last European Athletics U23 Championships, the German team finished third in the medal table behind Russia and Poland with three Gold, six Silver and four Bronze medals. In Erfurt the team are looking to better that tally and will be counting particularly on their throwers and combined events athletes to achieve medal success.
